VGA and Stereo Sound Processor on MOJO

Post by AtomicZombie » November 19th, 2013, 2:45 pm

Greets MOJO users!

I am midway through a cool MOJO project that pumps out 400x300 VGA and stereo sound. The MOJO acts as a VGA generator as well as a blazing fast GPU and sound processor. The MOJO takes commands from an external CPU (XMega-384 in my case) and can do things like sprite drawing, rotation, lines, circles, text, and can also play multi channel sampled sound.

I have based this project off some of my previous work such as my all logic Lazarus-64 Game System...

AVR only NTSC demo machine...

and my old AVR VGA generator...

The MOJO board was perfect for this project, and I used up every single IO, including the LED lines, which are now hacked into IO pins. I also removed the 50MHz clock and replaced it with a new clock (that was a bit of an ugly hack!).

I now have 31 IO lines being used for 1024K of 10ns SRAM (dual 512K SRAMs), 14 IO lines used for 12 bit (4096 color) VGA, 2 IO lines for stereo audio, and the remaining lines go to an external XMega-384 clocked at 64MHz.

Will post more details and photos when I have the chance.

Cheers,
Brad

Thanks!

I will post photos one at a time as I redo this project onto the new V3 board.

Here is the basic layout showing the hacked clock module, adjusted 12 bit VGA board, and a 1mb SRAM made by stacking a pair of 512K SOJ packaged SRAMs on top of each other with eh CE lines broken out...

I made the SRAM carrier board by slicing off the edge of an old PCI card.
Next will be the wiring of the SRAM lines to the pins and then the addition of the XMEGA-384 carrier board.

Cool project, but what happened to your crystal?
